Not until food could be harvested in a communal way could cities or states come about. Too many people have now lost the idea of gardening as a way to create a healthier society and are far removed from where their food comes from.

Primula auricula, more commonly known as auricula, mountain cowslip or bear’s ear, is an alpine flowering plant that originates from the mountain ranges of Central Europe. The auricula first appeared in European gardens around the middle of the sixteenth century. Since then its rather beautiful ‘unreal’ appearance has made it a collectors plant and has led to the creation of many cultivars including show varieties. The Victorians in particular had a fondness for this showy little plant and it became fashionable to display many varieties in auricula theatres. This little plant is easy to grow. Here follows a short guide to growing auriculas and some of my favourite varieties.

How Often Should You Mow Your Lawn?

The weather conditions can often determine how often you mow your lawn, but lawns do need some tender loving care when it comes to mowing. Generally with the tropical weather on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast the rule is to mow fortnightly during the warmer months and every three weeks when it is cooler. During the current Autumn period the intervals between mowing increases slightly to 3 weekly.

Why Aquaponics Remains Crucial to Everyday Living

Aquaponics is a combination of aquaculture (fish farming) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil). Aquaponics allows fish and plants to thrive in a closely monitored system. It has been lauded as one of the most efficient farming systems ever devised by man. Aquaponics requires only one-tenth of the water that normal farming requires. This makes it a perfect farming system for geographical areas that are too hot or that do not enjoy enough rainfall.

Garden and Garden Tools

We have all heard the statement “The right tool for the right job”. You would not take a set of pruning shears to cut a big branch off a tree, or a chain saw to trim up roses. It is advisable to use a pruning trimmer to trim up green leaf items like daffodils, or a ratchet cutter for people without muscles in their hands and be sure to keep your garden gloves on. Another item to trim up a branch is with a pruning saw, even if it is higher up than you can reach.
