Whether you have the blank canvas of a new garden or are trying to make improvements to an existing design, the first step is to decide exactly what you want as well as what changes you will have to make to achieve your ideal garden. This may seem a simple question, but in practice it can prove problematic, especially if there are two gardeners in the house. The easiest way to decide what you really want is to make several lists.

Passion Fruit Pleasures

Summer would not be complete with out having a passion fruit vine in the garden. Widely grown in the warmer parts of the world it is a native plant of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. It is now grown commercially from Sri lanka to New Zealand and Australia. A climbing plant that grows quickly in a position it likes, covering unsightly fences and walls with its interesting flowers and fruit. There are three varieties, Banana passion fruit, “passiflora mollisima” an oval or elongated fruit not unlike a rather squat banana. The fruit of this vine has very sweet tasting fruit. The drawback to this vine is that it can become a pest so maintaining control over its growth and spread is essential. It also tolerates cooler weather and light frosts. The most common is the edulis variety can also tolerate weather to a light frost. A prolific cropper, I had over 200 fruit off a 1-year-old plant. The third is the giant form “quadrangularis” it has huge sweet purple fruit and like the rest of the variants is a vigorous and fast growing plant.

Shaded Garden Tips

Most homes have a sunny side and a shaded side. In the southern hemisphere the warm side is the north side of the property, while in the northern hemisphere it will be the southern side. Often a problem to grow plants because of the lack of sun and sometimes it is also the windy side as well. Another problem that occurs is that the overhanging eaves of a home protect the shaded garden from getting its fair share of rain. This can make it very dry as well. Many plants like these conditions and are hardy enough to survive and look good. Before planting it could be wise to do a soil test to ensure the acidity of the garden is suitable. These parts of the garden get ignored very easily, so when buying another property and there is wasteland on the cold side of the house you will need to know how the land lies! Note how long the sun is on this area if at all. It may only suit a playground for children as an alternative use, Spread some good compost and mulch after digging over the garden beds.
