Lawns are still very much part of the English garden. Whether they are as pristine as a bowling green or merely a space for children to play, the lawn has an important role to play in the design of a garden. Water appears to be in abundance in today’s society and for the most part you would never think to conserve it but in time’s of drought the places which suffer the most are your gardens. There are however ways to combat such problems with the right preparations in place so that your garden remains green with ample water all year round, regardless of the weather.

One novel way of growing lettuce is in lengths of plastic guttering. Having grown peas in this way for some time, transferring the seedlings into the round once they are big enough, I decided to reuse the lengths of guttering to grow lettuce, and it really works! I have found the cut and come again mixed leaf varieties grow best as they tend to have shallower roots systems than the larger, more compact varieties and so can tolerate being grown in a shallow container.
