Organic in the Garden – Building a Soil For Sustainable Future Crops

Organic Gardening and farming builds on the asset the soil naturally gives us as a growing medium by supporting soil organisms and bacteria which naturally provide the nutrients and sustainable growth benefits plants need for natural growth. Garden Wagons Are Not All Created Equal!

Are you trying to decide which type of garden wagon will be best for your garden? My senior mom and I went shopping for a garden wagon for her yard this weekend and discovered some important things for you to consider that will save you time, energy, and money.

Types of Fertilizers

Fertilizers are grouped according to their mode of manufacture or origin. Organic fertilizers are derived from naturally occurring organic materials, such as animals and plants. Some of the most widely used are bone meal, high in phosphorus, fishmeal, fish, blood and bone, hoof and horn, high in nitrogen and seaweed meal, also high in nitrogen.

Speeding Up Composting

There are several actions you can take to minimize the times it takes for the composting process to be completed. Give the decomposition process a kick start by adding a proprietary compost activator or a spiteful of well rotted compost from a previous bin to each layer of material added. This will provide extra nitrogen and introduce the necessary micro organisms needed for decomposition.

Single and Double Digging

Used on heavier soils, single digging is a very good technique for incorporating organic matter into the upper layer of soil. It follows the same process as simple digging, except a trench about twelve inches wide is excavated across the plot and the soil deposited on one side. A layer of well rotted garden compost or manure is placed in the bottom of the trench. Moving six inches back, the next row is dug, but the excavated soil is thrown forward to fill the first trench. After two passes across the plot the first trench will have been filled and a second trench created.

Garden Compost

Composting is good for your garden and good for the environment. It is a convenient way of getting rid of garden waste and will also saves you money, so it is well worth making the effort to do it. Making your own compost is sound sense. It returns organic matter and nutrients to the soil that would otherwise be lost.

Fertilizers and Nutrients

Plants need a range of essential nutrients to grow well. The amount of fertilizer you use and how often you need to apply it will depend on your soil and the types of crops you are trying to grow. In nature a nutritional cycle occurs whereby plants take nutrients from the soil as they grow, then eventually die and rot, allowing the nutrients to return to the soil.

Creating a New Lawn

The decision to create a new lawn is not one to be taken lightly, but it does give you the opportunity to give your garden a top quality surface. A new lawn is best laid in spring or early autumn. The main consideration once you have decided to have a new lawn is whether to grow it from seed or lay turf. Seed is cheaper, costing less than a quarter of the price of turf, and is easier to do.
