Rainbarrels have been a part of many Americans’ lives since our country’s beginning. Later, my Grandfather and I filled the watering can from a weathered oak barrel and gave his tomatoes a good drenching. The rainbarrel stood under a downspout at the back corner of the house and augmented water supplied by their well. The use of barrels and in-ground cisterns for rain harvesting systems was common in both homes and barns across America as late as the 1940s.
