The genus name Canna comes from the Greek ‘kanna’ and the Celtic ‘cana’ which refers to ‘a reed-like plant’ (and is also the root of the musical term ‘canon’). The name Canna was applied to this genus as early as 1576 and was formally given to the genus by Linnaeus in his seminal work Species Plantarum. (Trivia: Canna is the first genus described in Species Plantarum).
